When it comes to your vehicle's drivetrain, there are a few key components that work together to transfer power from the engine to the wheels. These include the constant velocity (CV) axle, joint, and driveshaft. At our repair shop locations across Florida, we specialize in servicing and repairing these drivetrain components, ensuring your vehicle operates smoothly and efficiently.
The CV axle is a shaft that connects the transmission or differential to the wheels. It plays a vital role in transferring power while allowing for the suspension movement with minimal loss of power or control. One end of the CV axle connects to the transmission or differential, while the other end connects to the wheel hub assembly. The CV joint allows the axle to flex and rotate while maintaining a constant speed. It consists of a set of bearings housed within a protective rubber boot. The CV joint not only transfers power but also accommodates the up-and-down movements of the suspension as you drive over bumps or uneven surfaces.
The driveshaft is another critical component in the drivetrain. In rear-wheel drive vehicles, the driveshaft transfers power from the transmission or transfer case to the rear differential. In front-wheel drive vehicles, the driveshaft is often replaced by two shorter CV axles. The driveshaft needs to be properly balanced and aligned to minimize vibrations and ensure smooth power delivery.
One of the most noticeable signs of a problem is a clicking or popping noise when making turns. This can indicate a worn-out CV joint which will need to be replaced. Vibrations during acceleration or at high speeds indicate a potential issue with your driveshaft. Imbalance or misalignment of the driveshaft can cause vibrations that can be felt throughout the vehicle. Our technicians can diagnose the root cause of the vibrations and make the necessary repairs to restore smooth operation. A torn or damaged CV axle boot is another common problem. The boot protects the CV joint from dirt and debris while keeping the grease inside. If the boot becomes damaged, the grease leaks out, and contaminants can enter, leading to premature wear and failure of the CV joint. Our team can replace the damaged boot or the entire CV axle if necessary.
